Talking about tragedy to children such as at Uvalde, TX

Uvalde tragedy

Our hearts are broken, and we are sure yours are as well, as we stand with Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. We as a country need to protect our children. However, we are hoping to bring some insights into discussing tragedies at home with kids.

-For children who are aware of the tragedy, whether through media, social media, friends, or your own family discussion, offer to answer any questions, and then do so factually, making sure to correct any misinformation. Most importantly, reassure your child that their school is a safe place.

-Talk to your child about how you, your child, and your family can help. Being able to help others even in a small way can give children a sense of control. Even sharing positive news stories or stories highlighting the good that others are doing in the wake of this tragedy can deliver a sense of calm, and of control.

-You can also read and utilize various online resources. The following, from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, have been well vetted. https://www.nctsn.org/what-is-child-trauma/trauma-types/terrorism-and-violence/school-shooting-resources
